USJ and Macao scientists join Brazil’s largest-ever Environmental Research Network under INCT 2024

Macao-based researchers have joined Brazil’s most ambitious environmental research initiative to date in a landmark move for international scientific collaboration.

CEMAR (the National Institute for the Identification, Quantification, Dispersion and Mitigation of Environmental Risks and Pollution by Emerging Contaminants in Marine and Coastal Environments) has been officially approved under the INCT 2024 Call, the largest programme of its kind ever launched in Brazil. CEMAR is one of 143 projects approved under the INCT 2024 programme, which received a record R$1.63 billion (approximately MOP2.66 billion) in funding. This expansion was made possible through additional funding from Brazil’s National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT), as well as the participation of new state research foundations. The initiative aims to foster multi-institutional, interdisciplinary networks to tackle strategic scientific challenges.

The project, coordinated by Prof Denis Abessa brings together a global team of experts, namely from São Paulo State University (Denis Abessa, Cristiane Ottoni, Leandro Castro, Milene Fornari, and Yoannis Rodríguez), Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research- IPEN (Almir Neto), University of Lisbon (António Brito), Federal University of Alfenas (Rafael Perna), and the University of Minho (Sara Silvério). From Macau, it includes Prof. Marta Filipa Simões from the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (SKLPlanets) at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Prof. André Antunes, Acting-Dean of the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ).

Their participation strengthens the scientific depth of the project and positions Macau as a key player in global environmental and planetary health research, sustainability and marine sciences. It shows that the MSAR also plays a role in linking with scientific partners in Portuguese-speaking countries.
